What is a Barn Dance / Ceilidh?

A barn dance or ceilidh is a fun, energetic social folk dance comprising English, Irish, Scottish and Celtic music, that is perfect for weddings, parties, fundraising and other special occasions. With a team of top musicians, you’ll have an event to really remember. We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about celidh dancing and booking below.

You can also find a curated list of frequently asked questions about Ceilidh bands and ceilidh events on the Ceilidh Network website

What is a barn dance / ceilidh?

A barn dance / ceilidh is an incredibly fun and active form of social dancing that people of all ages can take part in! You will always find someone to dance with and get the chance to meet a roomful of people. In the dances there’s often a recognisable structure, e.g. formations in squares, circles or lines, and a fairly regular pattern where the various couples do things in turn.

Do I need to know how to dance?

Not at all! We start simply, with our expert caller running you through the moves before the dance starts. The caller will continue to remind you what to do once the dance has started so that you won’t be confused.

What sort of music will the band play?

Lively and fun traditional music from the British Isles and beyond. We can even customise the music to your own requirements, should you or your guests have a favourite tune or dance in mind.

What is the format?

Dancing time is typically between 2 and 3 hours, usually with a break for refreshments halfway through. The band will play tunes at the start of the evening to get your guests in the mood for dancing and their feet tapping!
